For those of you with a very costly investment who wish to monitor the water treatment corrosion rate here is one suggestion.

Mount a steel tab on the inside of the steam dome cover and have two holes drilled in it to accommodate or mount a test coupon that will hang straight down. For full size and narrow gauge locomotives use a piece of metal 2" wide by at least 1/4" thick. Drill matching holes for the covers attachment tab and use at least 3/4" course threaded 400 series stainless bolts and be sure to use lock washers and jam nuts for vibration. Size this tab so it hangs down into the boiler below the water level and an at least an inch above your heating or generating surfaces.

Make sure you scale the coupon, document its weight in grams and stamp the weight on the coupon. Each time the coupon is removed and scaled document its weight in grams along with the date.

Always use the same calibrated scale. This way you can track the corrosion rate of your boiler and how well you're water treatment program is doing.

This process will work the same on smaller scale locomotives as you will have to use your own judgment in scaling down. Always make sure the test coupon is made out of the same material as your boiler metal. We have been doing this for many years successfully on fire tube and water tube boilers. Remember always consult your boiler inspector and water treatment consultant on any code boiler installation.

This is old time steam engineering that is from tried and proven practices. Remember that a good water treatment program only slows corrosion yet does not completely halt it.
